Lab information systems: from sample to flagged result
A laboratory information system exists to do two things well: keep track of where every sample is, and make sure an abnormal result reaches a clinician quickly. Everything else is convenience around those two jobs.
The catalog is the foundation
A test catalog with reference ranges attached is what makes automated interpretation possible. Once each test knows its normal range, entered results can be flagged as Normal, High, Low or Critical without anyone comparing numbers by hand.
Tracking the sample, not just the order
Turnaround time complaints are almost always visibility problems. When an order, its sample and its result share one record, the front desk can answer 'where is my report?' without walking to the bench.
Critical values need alerts, not reports
A critical result sitting in a completed report is a risk. It should raise an alert to the treating doctor the moment it is entered — and in a connected system that alert lands on the same patient record the consultation and prescription live on.
